Pick the moment the reader needs to see
One action is usually enough for a storybook page. Say who is doing what and how the other character reacts. Leave decorative background details until the scene is understandable.
Example: sharing an umbrella
Try “A small rabbit holds a yellow umbrella over a hedgehog beside a puddle. The rabbit leans slightly toward its friend; both look relieved. Soft blue rain, warm green grass and a quiet pale area across the top for two lines of text.”
Check that both characters fit under the umbrella and that its handle connects to the rabbit's paw. If the mood becomes frightening, reduce the dark sky and remove sharp dramatic shadows.
Fit the picture to the page
